Nokia today released its Wireless Applications Protocol 2.0 microbrowser for Internet-surfing handsets. But the browser, available on all Nokia’s 7100-series handsets shipping in Europe, isn’t just an upgrade. The 2.0 version will be shipped to phone makers as source code, enabling manufacturers and carriers to tinker with it.
"This makes it much easier for vendors to make carrier-specific changes," says Paul Chapple, manager of business development for Nokia, adding that user interface, synchronization and security can all be customized by altering the source codes. "They design it as they go, and it’s much more flexible."
Nokia’s move - the first time a software vendor has unveiled source codes industrywide - could rattle Phone.com’s current stronghold on the WAP microbrowser market. Some predict a number of vendors will make a bee line for the browser, possibly choosing it over Phone.com’s fixed, binary-code browser. <<
