Felix,
Java is not a replacement for Smalltalk. Smalltalk is a brilliant modelling language and powerful database tool. Java is aimed at a somewhat different market than Smalltalk. Parq has had a lot of trouble with earnings due to their management and generally pissing off the development community with runtime fees (which they recently eliminated). Therer are other reasons for the earnings problems, but in the interest of brevity I will just say that Smalltalk is a VERY powerful tool and the true wave of the future. Parq is a pure turnaround play if I have ever seen one, albeit a speculative one.
BTW, IBM is competing with Parcplace rather vigorously with their own Smalltalk platform.
Just my two cents,
