Private Sector: Creating Contracts With Corporate America COMPILED BY RICK GLADSTONE
Plastics.
Yes, more than three decades after "The Graduate" made that word famous, plastics have captured the imagination of Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker now embarked on a new career as a corporate strategic consultant. His firm, the Gingrich Group, has lined up 20 clients -- Millennium Plastics, a Las Vegas start-up, is the latest in his growing roster.
The Gingrich Group advises an eclectic array of companies. Millennium Plastics makes a biodegradable plastic for use in products ranging from water-soluble golf tees to food utensils that submarines can jettison without harming the ocean. Then there is Idleaire, which markets computer hookups to truck stops, and Scientific Learning, which promises to raise a child's reading skill by two grade levels in eight weeks.
"At his core, Newt is a visionary," said Rick Tyler, an executive at the Gingrich Group, whose Web site is loaded with pictures of Mr. Gingrich on the covers of business magazines. "He can walk into a particular context, analyze what's going on and, from that comes an explosion of ideas and action items."
The Web site features glowing words from the strategy guru Peter Drucker, who said of Mr. Gingrich, "If I've ever seen a real entrepreneur, he's one." In fact, the Gingrich Group's tag line promotes the uniqueness of its main product: "There is only one Newt Gingrich." -- Leslie Wayne |
