You know, people say that, and yet I've had amazingly good luck with my plans. I put my kids in to band, because I figured it would force them to associate with kids from families who generally gave a damn- and it did. Worked out better than I could have imagined.

Some of it is luck, but good planning pays off- whether in investments, or in terms of your kids. I see it in the kids at school too. I think if your expectations are reasonable, and you plan well and keep to your plans, you can have a large impact on your children's lives. I see it in the Mormon community, and basically we do a lot of what they do, we just do it in a secular way.

The worst thing a parent can do is figure a teen is "raised" by high school, and turn off the parental inputs. I see it a lot, and it often bears a bitter harvest.
