I ran chkdsk on a Windows 7 machine yesterday and actually sat there for at least an hour watching the 4th stage of the process -if R is checked-...(checking if there are bad sectors).

The screen showed that it found 6 bad clusters. Apparently corrupted files, and replaced them.

Now the question is..what's the difference between a bad sector and a bad cluster? I've done some googling and there seems to be opinions all over the place..lots of confusion about the subject. I know no more about the answer than I did before I read up on it.

Also many different opinions about whether or not bad clusters are an indication that the drive is buying the farm. Some say yes..some say no.

Any strong opinions about what bad sectors or bad clusters might mean as far as the longevity of a hard drive?
