Gilder Report Argues for CDMA
Technology - Gilder Report Argues for CDMA (Steve Milunovich 212-449-2047)
Excerpts fr Merrill Lynch
• George Gilder's August Technology Report came out yesterday. He argued that the technical superiority of CDMA will ultimately
win out despite GSM's market share lead today.
• George remains negative on TDMA technology, the basis for the GSM standard he sees promoted mostly by governments. CDMA's
great feat is that it uses processing to turn noise into silence. He points out that most promised 3G approaches use some form of
CDMA. He thinks that both GPRS and EDGE will be hard pressed to compete with a CDMA 2000/HDR combination.
• Qualcomm (QCOM; $56 7/16; C-3-1-9) is still his favorite name in CDMA. Our analyst Michael Ching has an intermediate term
Neutral on the stock due to the transition to 3G. Also, George added Wireless Facilities, Inc. (WFII), a provider of outsourced
wireless services, to his Telecosm list of favored companies.
