Heard a rumour yesterday that Intel's next generation
processor outperforms DEC's current Alpha generation. If
true, that would pretty much put the kibosh on DEC as Alpha
performance is the main thing that makes their server platforms
attractive. Unless DEC release something better before Intel.
If true this is good news for Intel, of course, helping
to mop up one of the few potential competing chip architectures.

Performance is becoming less and less of a differentiator, leaving
Intel, with the only architecture that all application developers
target (via Windows) as the king of the hill.

(I also heard that NT on DEC Alpha does not use Alpha's native
floating point capabilities if you are writing C/C++, and that you
have to use assembler code if you want to truly take advantage of Alpha
FP performance. And, Alpha's 64-bit capabilities are not supported in
NT. Alpha/NT is 32-bit only, evidently. All of this is bad news for
DEC, good news for Intel, and doesn't matter to Microsoft).

Intel will no doubt have its bouts of stock swooning, but as a long term
investment it's hard to see how you can go wrong with INTC. (Famous
last words ...)
