Could I have told my broker, buy me 100 shares at the market and then using that uptick immediately sell short 1000 shares? Is this legal? If so it seems like the perfect way to get around that damn uptick rule. >>

Shorting against the box allows you to go short any time you want, the odds are you must build such a compound position in advance. More details at

I believe margin requirement at E*Trade for shorting against the box is 10%.
