Perhaps, Delbert, if the possum paused for a moment to scratch it's ass, none of that calamity would have happened. You may want to resolve, in your cause and effect paradigm, why this possum did not scratch it's ass at that particular moment. But let's go further. Why didn't the possum's prehistoric ancestral smug pause for a moment to get crunched by the gigantic brontosaurus' hoof? None of this should have happened! Let's be more causation oriented out there.
