Shep, in my opinion, the minimum wage is only meant to provide a floor for wages so that:

a) There aren't any obvious cases where businesses get ahead by severely underpaying workers, and
b) All other wages above minimum wage have some support.

Minimum wage was never meant to provide a "living wage." If you need a "living wage," you have to work your way up. If you can't, you'll have to rely upon support from family, friends, or even the state. Or you'll just have to live very cheaply, e.g. in public housing, on Medicaid/ObamaCare, etc.

To force employers to pay "living wages" would cause many employers to go out of business and unemployment to go up.
