Dear superhero, I didn't expect you to know. I thank you for your commiseration. He was my favorite uncle and my godfather; we spent every holiday together for as long as I can remember and when my mother died, Ray and Marie did their best to comfort me and to help fill the void.

He was also an astonishingly good person. Rather than make a pain of himself preaching his religious beliefs, he lived them.

He was 85, so it was not as though he had been cut off in his youth. However, the end was painful and he was not himself much of the time; the illness affected his mind. When my mother died, we were able to take leave of each other with love and respect and I am very sad that this was not possible with Ray. On the other hand (positive thought), we had a life time of love and a warm and loving family still remains among the current generation of cousins as well the good fortune of two aunts still living--as I said at the luncheon following the funeral, we are damned lucky in that our uncles were not only special people in their own right; they married to our life-long happiness women who are a treasured part of the family.
