Your son's prof's and bosses are not saying that. No prof would discourage a grad student from going all the way. A Masters does very little for you.... I hired a lot of both types and found a MS little better than a BS..... PhD's arrive with at least 4 years of original research under their belts and hit the ground running....little additional training or supervision required....
