Google could potentially turn off these services for non-Google phones, but that would defeat their open standards, and I highly doubt that's their aim.

Don't forget the Microsoft-killer aspect of the gPhone, either. Google would love to diminish the influence of its chief rival.

Open source code, cheap Office-like apps, mobile devices with friendly interfaces, service-oriented backend...all the things MS either doesn't do, or doesn't do well.
