What is the point of that article - does it have one ?

The throw away conclusion seems to be that hybrid technology is a false hope, and that we should wait for the 'perfect solution' before attempting anything.

The impetus for hybrids is the cost (read availability) of liquid fuels. All existing hybrids do is maximize the mileage from existing fuels. They create nothing, but waste as little as possible. Whether this is "sustainable" is solely an economic, not technical, question.

Contrast current hybrid technology with the new interest in "plug-in" electrics. Now we can compare the economic viability of pure combustion engines based on liquid fuels with electric powered vehicles based on coal or nuclear power generation (to produce electricity). The appeal of hybrids goes way up, and not a single fuel cell is needed. We still need a big battery, however, but that remains the only stumbling block.

A frequent criticism of hybrids is that they "cost more". The fact that an SUV with bells and whistles "costs more" also doesn't seem to be part of the comparison. Cost is not the driving issue however, only "affordability". If you drive on a highway anywhere in the US you know "affordablity" is not a problem.
