Now, it may be that there was an assumption that those rabid right wing extremists who post on SI are incapable of posting in a moderate tone. I grant that there is some fairly strong evidence for that. (As there is for the converse, that rabid left wingers also tend to be incapable of expressing their thoughts in a moderate tone.)

And it may be that the idea of the thread has morphed somewhat as it has developed.

But I still am not so sure that your opinion is justified.
