You know, it would seem that Livingston is better positioned to deploy the ROK/LUCENT product faster that Rockwell or Lucent. The architecture of Livingston remote access servers is similar to USR's in that they use generic DSPs with downloadable software drivers. They share the same time-to-market advantage as US Robotics, except for the fact that they have to wait for the "consortium" to agree on a compatible product protocol - then they have to emulate it in software and voila' - 56k via software.

I find it very odd that they would go that route (ROK/LUCENT). Must have been a lot of bad blood between them and USR over the other licensing deal. They may have stuck it to USR on renewal royalties, and USR may have stuck it right back to them when negotiating for x2 licensing. Or possibly they knew they couldn't compete with USRX racks, and elected to differentiate themselves by going with an alternative protocol.

Only their hairdressers know for sure.
