OCTOBER 21, 1998 ATLANTA, GEORGIA--Announcements at N+I Fall Demonstrate Company's Commitment to Meeting the Evolving Demands of Carriers and Large Enterprises. Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE; NNC), a world leader in networking technology, today announced at Networld+InterOp 98 in Atlanta new products, product enhancements and service contracts that reinforce and extend its position as the IP VPN vendor of choice. These announcements serve as additional proof points in the Company's continued commitment to providing carriers and large enterprises with a scalable, reliable, manageable and application-proof infrastructure for enabling revenue-generating, value-added IP business services today. "Analyst studies have shown that over the next five years 70 percent of Fortune 500 companies are looking to outsource to service providers," said Alan Lutz, President and Chief Operating Officer, Newbridge Networks. "This represents a tremendous opportunity for our customers -- and only Newbridge provides the flexibility of a multi-service, multi-access infrastructure and unparalleled access to core network and services management that allows them to take advantage of the IP VPN opportunity now." New Products/New Enhancements Siemens and Newbridge Networks today continued their drive to consolidate disparate networks onto one, unified, end-to-end, managed multi-services network with the introduction of the Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress(tm) 36177 MultiServices Platform. This is the newest addition to the MainStreetXpress family of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) products jointly developed by Siemens and Newbridge, the ATM industry leaders. The MainStreetXpress 36177 extends the broadband core network capabilities of the MainStreetXpress 36170 MultiServices Switch to the farthest reaches of the network, complementing the strengths of the MainStreetXpress 36140/36144 MultiServices ATM Access Switches. This comprehensive family of products enables service providers to seamlessly deliver value-added services and end-to-end network and service management over an ATM infrastructure. Newbridge Networks has also taken a lead in integrating ATM with optical networking technology, launching the industry's first integrated dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) platform. Developed jointly with Newbridge(r) Affiliate Cambrian Systems Corporation, this scalable, cost-effective networking solution is designed specifically for carriers providing services in metropolitan area networks. By combining DWDM-based transport with an ATM core infrastructure, this innovative solution provides a robust, resilient platform for transporting and delivering multiple services from a single, managed platform. In addition, Newbridge announced this week versatile Internet Protocol (IP) multicasting for its Switched Routing portfolio of products, demonstrating the Company's commitment to video, voice and data convergence as part of its Enterprise and Carrier Switched Routing solution. With up to 65 million packets per second of aggregate multicast forwarding into a Switched Routing network, the Newbridge solution provides the highest performance, greatest scalability and most easily managed multicast implementation available for today's networks. Newbridge also announces at N+I the availability of Release 1.0 of its Carrier Switched Routing product portfolio. Based on a number of key existing and proposed industry standards, including CSI (Carrier Scale Internetworking) and MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching), Carrier Switched Routing is a solutions framework that enables service providers to offer IP VPN services that are scalable, reliable, predictable and measurable -- the parameters that business customers require and demand. Newbridge also recently announced the extension of its industry-leading network and service management to its broadband access solutions, including broadband wireless and Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL). Traditionally known for its strengths in managing multi-service backbone networks, the Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress portfolio of network and service management products now enables newly licensed operators and established service providers to aggressively deploy broadband access infrastructures to extend the reach of existing and new advanced services. This demand has resulted from the tremendous growth of the Internet and multimedia services. New Service Contracts Newbridge Networks today announced that Deutsche Telekom, the third largest telecommunications supplier in the world, is taking the lead in launching a next-generation switched broadband service for corporate customers, using the industry-leading Siemens / Newbridge MainStreetXpress 36170 MultiServices Switch, and the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager. Launched under the brand name, T-Net ATM, this dynamic, flexible service offering delivers switched virtual circuit (SVC) services to meet customers' changing bandwidth and network requirements, depending on the applications being used. In addition, Newbridge Networks announced that Central Texas Communications, a full service telecommunications service provider and Local Multi-Point Distribution Service (LMDS) spectrum holder, has selected Newbridge as its strategic networking vendor for the implementation of a LMDS network -- the first of its kind in the U.S. Newbridge Networks designs, manufactures, markets and services networking solutions to organisations in more than 100 countries.
