Chuck : I dont have the time to post the whole tree. DEC used to maintain a detail chart (3ft) Each of the layers viz Application, Presentation, Session, Transport, Network, Data and Physical have heaps of protocols . Thats why it is so OPEN. Now Optical want a new set of their own. I agree with you that innovation is necessary. All that I am stating is that very little research is done to verify if the total system benefits warrants the change. It appears that Corporate America is now doing just that.
