Alec,

As I understand it, the distance from the ATM backbone (fiber)
to most homes is less than 3 miles. ADSL is just meant to speed
up those last 3 miles. As fiber gets closer and closer to the
curb, ADSL becomes higher and higher spped (I believe VDSL
is looking at 50 Mb/s upstream --see some of the other psts)
