Paul,

Look through the uP Forum proceedings. Everybody is bragging about how many execution units they have, out-of-order execution capabilities, etc. ad infinitum. They should be thinking about MHz, cache size, die size and manufacturability.

The best microprocessors ever designed were the first few revs of Alpha. Logically, they were very simple CPUs which had a large cache and ran at a high clock speed. (BTW: 21264 appears to have been a step backwards, it runs at considerably slower clock rates than 21164.)

If someone in the x86 world would have taken that same approach, they would have blown away the competition. Architects love to show off who's is bigger, but they do their companies and investors a huge disservice in the process.
