That's not how things were written back then. A lot of scholarly work has been done on State Constitutions with the same prefatory clauses. The history is clear that just because it says militia (which according to Federal Law is every male between 18 and 45), doesn't mean that is the only reason, it's just the major reason. When you are talking about every male between 18 and 45 in an entire country, that's a major reason but not the only reason. That's how they wrote back then and the discussions and writings in such things as the Federal papers back it up.
