It also stated in the press that the Freeport deal was long in the works by Hasan as the Barrick deal continued to occupy the press. Hasan's ties are very strong with the gov't and Freeport and it was stated quite clearly that Hasan engineered the deal. If you thing Bre-x had a choice - I don't. They were not going to be allowed a proper bid by others such as Placer and Teck. Hasan had the ear of Suharto, despite the fact that son and daughter were involved, and Bre-x was pushed. They had no option.
