If it is assumed that dolphins are at least as intelligent as humans, have a system of communication and extraordinary sensitivity to sound -- why do they get caught in fishing nets? I think they would learn to avoid the sound of a certain class of boats.

Another limitation would seem to be lack of written language. Perhaps they do great research but can take no notes. Have to keep starting over.

I don't know much about dolphins but enjoy them hugely. Almost every evening I "walk" with them as it is common for them to swim barely off the beach at that time of day.
