I don't declarethe truth to be unworthy of success. Not at all.

What I do is recognize that for the justice system to work it must have a mechanism for overcoming the natural tendency of people to shade the truth to their advantage.

In an era where the vengence of God was considered a real thing, Hell a real place, and violation of the oath a certain path to Hell, that was a fairly effective deterrent to untruty.

Today, however, few people believe that swearing falsely will cause them eternal torment. And there are virtually no prosecutions for perjury. I've never seen a single one. The justice system has yet to devise an appropriate alternative to an effective oath.
