The boldest claim made by the NK defector is that even the politicians participate in this black market for goods. You would think that these are the very people who get first dibs, but I guess the system is so corrupt and broken that even among them it's every man for himself.

As for the information control that the NK regime practices, I guess that too isn't really working. Only thing that does is whipping up Korean nationalism. Hatred against Japan which has its roots in history, and hatred against the United States which is just another power in the long history of Korea being a stepping stone.

That part about ignoring South Korea was interesting, though. That might be sheer denial sinking in, how their brothers and sisters below the 38th parallel are leading much nicer lives.
