The real threat has always been totalitarianism of any stripe, any philosophy, any pseudonym. THe claptrap we have now is no different from the claptrap we had 50 or 200 years ago - it's so many people who know so many things that ain't so. (I think Kin Hubbard said it better. Or maybe it was Mark Twain).
