iGST to Demonstrate Sigma Designs Set-Top Box With Windows CE TVPAK Support at NCTA
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1999--Sigma Designs Inc. (Nasdaq:SIGM - news) today announced a TVPAK-compatible reference platform for adding DVD playback to Microsoft's (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) Windows CE operating system.
Called the STB-2000, the announcement was made at the 1999 NCTA Conference. The combination of DVD video playback with a Windows CE device represents a major breakthrough in home convergence appliances.
Sigma's Windows CE-compatible set-top box design will provide users with a single solution for browsing the Internet, sending/receiving e-mail, playing DVD and CD discs, ordering movies on-demand, and more.
With Sigma's REALmagic EM 8220 MPEG-2/DVD decoder chip on the motherboard, viewers will have full-screen images that are always clear, clean, and crisp. The decoder chip interfaces directly to a iGS Technology CyberPro(TM) display chip for high-performance video in a window as well as full-screen DVD and MPEG-2 video playback that equals today's conventional DVD players.
''The Windows CE platform is the pre-eminent solution for convenient living room Web browsing,'' said Alan Yates, director of platform marketing at Microsoft. ''The combination of a WebTV browser and a DVD player is a killer consumer application that will bring a lot of excitement into living rooms. The Sigma set-top box design provides a low-cost, easy-to-use solution for the convergence of HDTV, WebTV systems, and DVD players.''
''The STB-2000 leverages our proven track record in DVD decoding and streaming video,'' said William K. Wong, Sigma's vice president of marketing. ''The STB-2000 is a logical extension of our leadership in delivering DVD decoders for Windows-based computers. Our OEM relationships with Panasonic, Sony, Hitachi, Toshiba, Philips and IBM have proven that we can deliver world-class DVD compatibility and performance in turn-key OEM solutions for Windows CE-based set-top boxes.''
The Sigma STB-2000 is being demonstrated at NCTA by iGST, Sigma Design's technology partner. iGST's CyberPro5050 streaming media controller is incorporated in the STB-2000 to provide flicker-free NTSC and PAL TV output.
''Sigma's STB-2000 clearly combines the strengths of our two firms' technologies,'' Mike Raghavan, senior director of marketing at iGST, said. ''The set-top box design provides cable firms and content providers with an attractive platform and most reasonably priced solution that is available today for delivering superior video quality and real-time OS support.''
