Jeffrey: I would say the impact of technology in the future would be anything but off topic for value investors. One of the major negative impacts on value investing approaches is the potential of tech changes to make toast out of what had been robust business models. Now you have to ask if a sell off isn't an indication that a meteor from cyberspace is about to have deep impact on a previously stable and isolated business ecosystem. We've recently discussed book stores, greeting cards and encyclopaedia's, but in fact virtually every business will be impacted by the net and technological changes.
I think we all have to ask, when analyzing whether a business is an oversold bargain, just what impact current trends and future twists in technology might have on the basic earning power of the business.
There will certainly be times that the investment community overestimates the impact of the net and technology on businesses, but it's important to understand where they're comin from.
