Dell Computers has dropped its 64-bit Intel-Itanium-based Precision Workstation 730 model to concentrate on Intel 32-bit processor workstations, a spokeswoman confirmed Monday.

Asked if the Itanium workstation demise was due to poor sales, the spokesperson said she had no sales data on the model sales.

Dell continues to carry the Itanium processor as part of its Power Edge server line. Even so, for one of Intel's most loyal customers to drop the workstation version doesn't help the processor giant's ramp-up of its 64-bit architecture against Unix workstation giants, such as Sun Microsystems, IBM Corp. and Hewlett-Packard.

The Dell spokeswoman declined to comment on whether Dell will participate in Intel's so-called on-going pilot launch of the McKinley processor, Itanium's successor, in its workstation line.
