Commission Recommends $1 Billion Increase for Cyber-Security

Washington, Oct. 21 (Bloomberg) -- The President's
Commission on Critical Infrastructure Protection recommends an
increase in spending to $1 billion for cyber-security research,
the Wall Street Journal reported. In a report to be released
tomorrow, the commission says the U.S. infrastructure may be
vulnerable to attack through cyber-space. The commission said the
situation has arisen due to an increasing reliance on information
systems, combined with the expansion of the infrastructure-based
industries, which has resulted in a dispersion of responsibility
for security, the paper reported.

Netscape Communications Corp. this month signed an agreement
to license software to the U.S. Defense Department.
