That is why this is a political discussion topic. Depending on which scientist you ask, ethanol derived from corn is either a source or a sink for energy. It is a source for VOC when used in gasahol and VOCs are the rate limiting part of smog. It increases pollution.

So, shockingly enough, the federal government, has forced states to use additional energy to create more pollution. To get votes from the farmers. Sadly, the California EPA has been forced to fall in line and use ethanol in gasoline.

I am not interested in the dollar cost of a bushel of corn, the issue is how much energy it takes to grow, harvest, transport, ferment, triple distill, and transport again. If this is more than the energy derived from burning the ethanol, it is simply a huge energy destroying boondoggle that makes the US ever more dependent on foreign sources of energy/oil.
