Linux, anyone?

Linux is fine, for anyone who wants to be a system administrator. I run it on an old machine as my house's internet connection using diald, a caching local DNS and IP masquerading. But what's my mom going to use? What about all my non-techie relatives and friends? It sure the hell ain't gonna be Linux.

I read somewhere that 50% of households now have have PCs. Of the remaining 50%, the ones without the existing base of installed software and therefore the ones with the least to lose by going with Linux, how many are techies and would even be capable of managing a Linux machine?

I also often see boasts about how long people's Linux machines have ran without rebooting. So what? My mom turns her machine off when she's done using it. So does my brother-in-law. So does my brother. So does nearly every other non-techie person I know.
