David <OK, last question for now- is the worry that yen rise scuttling the Japanese recovery based primarily on the fact that this will hurt Japanese exports?> Yes. The Japanese economy is a one trick pony -- exports. The message of the US to Japan is: you are not allowed to export your way back to economic growth. The US is more willing to accept the lower dollar to help balance trade. We must move to more balanced trade or risk what we are already risking now -- economic dependence on foreigners as investors. Think of it this way - with a $300 billion dollar trade deficit, foreigners depend on our consumer markets and we must depend on their investments to offset the deficit (this keeps the dollar strong and inflation low) -- but it has gone on too long and it has gone too far -- unwinding this is good in the long term but for now it means investors will leave our markets, our dollar wil fall and our stock markets will slip lower.
