When we first came here we were naive, I think. Heck, some of us used are real names. Speaking for myself I was still thinking of dialog here as analogous to conversations in 3d- but they aren't like that. You have no idea who is "listening" to you- or who will decide to respond. In 3d I don't discuss anything confrontational with people- very few "ideas" get discussed with strangers- so I never know how many people I bump up against in 3d have strange ideas that are in total opposition to my own. I am sure I find intellectual compatriots here among people I would never meet in 3d- different social circles, different ages, and of course different geographic regions- and that is wonderful. But along with that you get people who are totally anathema to you, people you would never meet or never REALIZE were anathema to you in 3d. When you meet someone who is totally unpleasant to you, I don't think there is much to be gained from interaction. Anyway, the trust is gone for me, it went a long time ago, it was an illusion anyway, but it's still fun to see old and new friends.
