For every real example of a conservative wack job they can cite there are 100+ LWE wack jobs who are far worse. But in their minds it's exactly the opposite despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

The main reason for this is projection. Their emotional attachment to their ideology is so strong they suffer a real psychosis when it comes to politics. And one of the insidious symptoms of psychosis is projection. It's something that they must do to cling to their unrealistic world view.
