Jonas,
You are correct; anything is possible, and indeed Informix may have a come-back. However, none of the previously strong competitors (Ingress/CA, Sybase) have been able to mount any meaningful snap-back. Now with the negative PR, prospective customers will be concerned about the Companys (Informix's) future and re-think their DB supplier. Declining revenue is a very serious situation, let alone a large loss. With this financial performance, or lack thereof, will Informix have the necessary resources to adequately fund R&D in order to turn the situation around? I'll be prospective customers will be thinking the same thing, and I'll bet Oracle will not let them forget.
A year or 2 ago, I thought Sybase would have a come-back, but it never did, and no one talks about them much anymore. Remember when the stock was in the 50's and 60's. The last time I looked, it was around 12.
Everytime I have seen Phil White in action, he has not appeared credible. With this kind of leadership, and the current situation, the future doesn't look too bright.
A better bet, in my opinion, is 3COM. It's been beaten down so badly, from 80 to 32 and their earnings are still decent, though below initial estimates. Look for at least 60 within 12 months.
Informix is just a gamble. But who knows, you could still hit the jackpot. |
