German Government Confirms 50% Renewable Energy Target By 2050

BERLIN -(Dow Jones)- The German government confirmed its target of generating 50% of the country's energy from renewable sources by 2050 in a draft law Friday.

The Environment Ministry Friday published its draft amendment to the country's renewable energy law, restating the final goal as well as intermediary goals of 12.5% by 2010 and 20% by 2020. In 2002, renewable energy including hydropower represented 9% of electricity generation.

The draft law also cuts subsidies for renewable energy providers.

The difference in costs between power from renewable sources and other sources is expected to decline to EUR0.01 a kilowatt-hour by 2016 from EUR0.045/kWh in 2004, the draft said.

Subsidies for wind energy are to be lowered, but offshore windpower will be subsidized for 12 years after wind parks start their activity.
