Martha's Vineyard
BY now, Martha's Vineyard is so well known (Bill and Hillary took care of that) and so frequently visited (those Black Dog T-shirts are now ubiquitous) that any sightseeing advice seems almost superfluous. Sure, go to the legendary Black Dog Tavern and buy a T-shirt like all the other tourist lemmings. But be warned: some shirts are printed with the year, and to Vineyarders, the only cool ones are the old ones.
And, absolutely, go to the cliffs in Aquinnah (better known as Gay Head) on the western end of the island - "up-island" in Vineyardese. The view is breathtaking, even with all those buses and ticky-tacky souvenir shops. But take some time to do as the Vineyarders do: ignore the shopping (every establishment aspiring to Black Dog status now sells its own T-shirt) and the zillions of restaurants (many are good; the best are mobbed) and enjoy this island outpost of Massachusetts for its history, idiosyncrasies, nature reserves and beaches. In its 100 square miles, with several very different towns, the choices are infinite.
