the iomega jaz drives are probably a good alternative. 1 gb per disk @ about $120 per disk. cost less than a read/write cd rom, running as fast as a hard disk. good windows 95, windows and dos tools.

we have 2 jaz drives here at work, and they are just great for backups, running apps. and basically act as a second hard disk. amazing product.
