Of course we want to be able to occupy Iraq after Saddam. Even if we say that it is possible for an assassination squad to get to Saddam, you have to ask whether or not the government that would come after him would be better without removing the entire ruling Baathist elite that run the country, not to mention Uday and Qusay. Without removing the entire apparatus of the police state, you'd just get another Saddam, or an Iraq that completely melts down, or an Iraq that is dissected by Iran, Syria, Turkey, and the Saudis.

That's one reason the Saudis are so intent on the idea of getting Saddam to go into exile, or have him assassinated. They know it would be the status quo, but it will be ugly for them if the US remakes Iraq into a liberal pluralistic nation. The oil is a tertiary concern. Hell we occupied Kuwait immediately after the Gulf War, and we could have twisted some arms and "taken control" of those very rich oil fields. We didn't. And we won't in Iraq, either.
