Company Press Release

AT&T First To Offer Direct Frame Relay Between U.S., China

BASKING RIDGE, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 22, 1997--AT&T said today it has signed a memorandum of understanding with China Telecom
to offer the first direct bilateral frame relay service between the United States and China.

AT&T Global Frame Relay Service is used by business customers, such as financial institutions, and manufacturing and high-technology
companies, to relay large amounts or ``bursts'' of data at speeds between 56 kilobits per second (kbps) and 1024 kbps.

Under the agreement with China Telecom, direct bilateral frame relay service will be launched in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. Service to Shanghai is already available. Service in Beijing will be available by Aug. 1. Service in Guangzhou is under development and scheduled for
turn-up in October.

Two major multinational customers are already using the service into Shanghai. Global research-based pharmaceutical firm Eli Lilly and Company of Indianapolis is using the service for inventory applications. Eaton Corporation, the Cleveland-based global manufacturer of products which serve industrial, vehicle, construction, commercial and aerospace markets, is using the service for electronic mail and financial reporting.

``AT&T's agreement with China Telecom demonstrates our commitment to helping global customers grow their businesses,'' said Ken Sichau,
vice president for AT&T's business network services group. ``Direct bilateral frame relay service meets their needs by giving them high-quality transmission performance at effective cost.''

Because the service is direct frame-to-frame, customers benefit from greater performance than if the service is transited through a third country or international private line extension.

With the addition of frame-relay connectivity to China, AT&T's frame relay service now reaches 33 countries worldwide.

AT&T is the world's premier communications and information services company, serving more than 90 million customers, including consumers,
businesses and government. The company has annual revenues of more than $52 billion and 130,000 employees. It runs the world's largest, most sophisticated communications network and is the leading provider of long-distance and wireless service. AT&T operates in more than 200
countries and territories around the world.
