Tom - thanks for your messages. I think the reason that AOL has captured 17 million members to date is due to very good marketing - I still seem to receive one AOL CD a month in the mail (and this has been going on for years). I definitely don't think free service is a slam dunk for Microsoft - they will have to make consumers aware that the service is free. But once consumers are aware, I think the equation is easy - I feel consumers will be more attracted to free service than $21.95 a month service, regardless of what 'member-only' services each ISP has to offer. I think that proprietary 'member-only' ISP-offered services are on the way out anyway. My own view is that people just want to get on the net, and once on the net, they will choose the sites they wish to use. Why should the consumer pay extra for the AOL or MSN services they never use (I currently have an MSN account, and I never use any MSN services - I pay solely to get on the internet).

Anyway, it will be interesting to see how it all turns out.

Thanks,
-Eric
