Americans would still buy cars, many of those cars would still be made in the US. The parts manufacturers would sell to whoever made the cars. Bankrupt or not the final assemblers and the parts companies would still employee most of the people they employed before (perhaps in a new corporate structure, or perhaps in an old company that gained market share as some other failed). Employment would tend to decline in this industry but that's a feature not a bug. Meeting the demand with less workers means the other workers can shift to something new and increase production overall. Its commonly known as creative destruction.
