TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2000 8:03:00 AM EST
WILTON, Conn., Nov 28, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Mercator(R) Software, Inc., (Nasdaq: MCTR) the e-business transformation company(TM), today announced that leading online retailer Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) has selected the Mercator E-Business Integration Broker suite as a key technology for its business-to-business (B2B) integration strategy. Amazon.com turned to Mercator's flexible B2B integration software with its strong any-to-any data transformation capabilities to provide a scalable and flexible solution to support its continued global growth. Amazon.com's use of Mercator as an enabling technology for its B2B initiative is an important element of the company's strategy to grow its business and provide more choice and superior service to its customers.

"Amazon's goal is to collaborate with our suppliers to increase efficiencies and improve inventory turnover," said Jim Miller, vice president of supply chain at Amazon.com. "We want to bring to suppliers the kind of interactive relationship that has inspired customers to shop with us. As the foundation of our supply chain integration initiative, Mercator will make it easy to integrate and share information with our growing worldwide community of business partners."

Mercator has allowed Amazon.com to simplify its business processes by reducing the number of complicated connecting interfaces with trading partners by more than 80% in four months. Mercator Commerce Broker has enabled Amazon.com to compress its time to production by accelerating the seamless integration of information from diverse business partners of varying sizes and technology capabilities, resulting in reduced costs and optimized B2B trading relationships. Amazon.com is now expanding its use of Mercator as the key technology to manage its event-driven transaction flows and to facilitate the integration of its global business processes. Mercator Commerce Broker provides Amazon.com with leading EDI functionality and a scalable information integration architecture that facilitates any-to-any data transformation, which enables Amazon.com to easily replicate its B2B infrastructure in a way that facilitates the further global expansion of its products and services.

"We are excited to enable Amazon.com to streamline and automate its business processes by implementing Mercator as the e-business integration backbone of their B2B strategy," said James P. Schadt, CEO, Mercator. "Amazon's supply chain processes are highly complex, requiring flexibility and scalability from its transformation and integration technology. The ability of our Mercator technology to handle any B2B format -- XML, EDI, legacy or packaged application -- over any type of transport -- HTTPS, SMTP/MIME, FTP, messaging middleware or value added network -- gives customers like Amazon the ability to quickly adapt their infrastructure as customer and partner requirements change and as global data standards develop."
