"A new phase of the Obama presidency?"

By John Hanlon on polls

The results from a new Wall Street Journal/NBC news poll should should be encouraging to many people, including myself, who were wondering when President Obama would start to be accountable (from a polling perspective) for the unpopular policies that the administration has endorsed and strongly advocated for. Many people have previously noted that Obama's personal popularity and the popularity of his policies have not matched up in past polls. Obama is a popular president who has made several unpopular high-profile decisions that have not seemed to hurt him politically. However, the WSJ article about the new poll results noted that "rising doubts [about the budget and the government's enlraged role in the economy] threaten to overshadow the president's personal popularity and his agenda, in what may be a new phase of the Obama presidency."

In the beginning of this year, there were many high hopes for the new administration, which represented an idealistic new view of the world and a major change from the past administration. Now, many of those hopes have been overshadowed by policy decisions and a massive government deficit. The WSJ article noted the following: "A solid majority -- 58% -- said that the president and Congress should focus on keeping the budget deficit down, even if takes longer for the economy to recover." That clearly forecasts a problem for the current Congress and administration in their pursuit of new government programs. The tidal wave of 58% percent of people wanting our leaders to focus on the deficit is a major obstacle to overcome for those who want to expand the role and power of government. This new phase of the Obama presidency may mean that the Obama administration will start to make more direct and drastic decisions about how to cut down government spending even in the short term.

There are some findings in the survey that the president should be pleased with. (For instance, according to the poll results, his approval rating is still high at 56%.) However, with the Obama administration now in its fifth full month in office, a new phase could mean that it is time for Obama to start focusing more on issues of the budget deficit and what that means for the American economy and he should be less focused on new programs that would only create a larger deficit.
