It's not that we want fewer people to have kids, it's that we want people to have fewer kids, or at least to make conscious decisions about how many kids they want.

I may have been a bit over-eager in attributing it to the thread, but I meant exactly what I said. I would like to see fewer people have kids.

I agree that making conscious decisions about how many kids to have is the crucial first step. But further, I really think there are lots and lots of parents who are ill equipped to raise families and it's important that they recognize it and act responsibly before they have the first one. The problem is not just the size of the population, it's that we're screwing up too many of the kids we produce. If all parents had half as many children, for example, that would take care of the population problem, but only if half the potential parents (the right half, of course) choose not to have any kids do we improve society in the process. Smaller average family size only means that the ill-equipped parents screw up fewer kids.
