Hi craig,
'Snickers bar, ice cream, honey, cake, Life Savers, or Skittles.'
Lack of satisfaction in general from that group.
I prefer a bagel once in a while, toasted with butter although in a crunch I'll also go with peanut butter and honey,
That's just because I prefer a bagel over those alternatives, the health issue in not considered, it's a snack! :0)

'You can find a gazillion different stances on kidney stones.'
I know of two main causes, mine are definitely calcium based. I can tell by watching my diet.

'I suspect most people don't drink enough water,'
I most heartily concur with you on that one. I will never be rid of the stone problem. I required surgery once. "percutaneous' removal. I looked like a Star Trek Borg :0) I suffered many painful attacks (more painful when you don't know the source) before my surgery. I now eat as much of the calcium rich brassicas as I care to. I'm partial to broccoli, cabbage, Chinese broccoli, Brussels sprouts, spinach, and especially asparagus (not the same family ?), yes lightly cooked or raw thank you very much with a little butter...... I drink lots and lots of plain old water daily and (at the risk of being too familiar) passing stones has become a non event.

'I happen to disagree. I think a vegan diet is terrible.'
I said it 'can' be good. I'll be more specific. To get the same balance of all the proteins one receives in a reasonable serving of meat or fish one needs to consume quite a variety of legumes. It is a much more complex affair than consuming animal protein (as you obviously know). I'll also agree that many people will sadly assume that lentils and chick peas will suffice. My point is that it is too much work for the return. There are better ways, I'll take my 6 oz ribeye thank you.

'The Inuit (Eskimos) eat lots of fat (whale blubber) and meat (caribou etc) and very little vegetables and no grains yet they don't have heart disease and cancer problems either. '

Isn't that also a function of overall life expectancy ? Modern medicine certainly has increased life expectancy, notwithstanding dietary considerations. Cancer and heart disease are not only increasing because of diet, they now have longer to ply their trade, not to mention all the 'special additives' in our environment ;o).

Don't agree on the mass quantities of eggs, and fat etc.... but I'm open if you've got facts....

regards
Kastel
