I agree...but again it all comes back to ego. And hubris. Past a certain point they just don't seem to see what's going on. The Clintons are more or less my age, my generation, we did the same stuff, went to the same schools, had the same experiences. So why don't they understand what a mess they've made? Why didn't they learn anything? Okay, they're not, in my view, evil, but they're damn dumb.
As you say: if they hadn't promoted themselves as being so very ethically pure, caring and all the rest, things might have gone better for them. (Not that things are going badly, actually: he was reelected, his popularity ratings are fine..)
Reagan. God. Mr Family Values. I've made a point of reading ALL of the family members' bios (well, when they came out in paperback, anyway), and oh boy were the Rs dysfunctional as they come. But no one really cared. I think because Ronnie's real gift was to present himself as the first non-angst-ridden president since Eisenhower. Well, we WERE tired of the paranoiacs and the hand-wringers, weren't we?
