I just recalled where I had read about the
capacity of satellite multiplexing. It was
in a book called "The Hidden Signals Of Satellite"
by Harrington. He talked about the great potential
for data services, communications. He also stated
that literally tens of thousands of telephone calls
(mostly bet. E. & W. coasts, or bet. U.S. & Europe)
are placed over the birds. By hooking a simple
shortwave receiver (with sideband control) into
the baseband output of a sat. receiver he was able
to tune into (usu. one side of call) with the sideband
control. Another great thing about digital has been
it's ability to ensure privacy.
