Hiam!
People remember pain for very long time. A lot of people who went through Great Depression did not trust money to banks. So they stoked them under mattress, or bury them in jars. They were really careful with spending for the rest of their life. Some went to extremes, like one of movie stars or singer (I saw documentary about a week ago) towed a trailer behind her Rolls Royce and cooked herself in the hotels.

What I'm getting to that spending habits will change because people would not feel that secure, and investment habits will change too. Investors will get more diversified and J6P will praise CD and savings accounts instead of buying for the long term and believing in DOW 30K or buying NUTS :-) Bonds will get more popular too. And the rest of us could rationally trade based on fundamentals or TA or something else, without herd running wild. Some people would even value stocks on dividends, long forgotten original idea of owning stock.
I received my Social Security statement last year. After decade of prosperity and “budget surpluses” they could fund only 75% of my entitlements, and raised retirement age to 67. Well, with 33 more years to go, I’m sure that I will have ZERO by time I retire. That’s why I save and want as big of tax cut as republicans could get.
When more people would think same way, then more they would save, and less of government they would permit.

Good luck!
